Revised abortion laws, A silver lining in abortion rights?

Writer's picture: Advait SinghAdvait Singh

On 19th September 2022 India's supreme court made a historical judgement, In the revised bill they finally gave unmarried woman the right to abortion up to 24 weeks and this judgement was the first time the supreme court also brought a lot of very important issues to attention like for example they recognized marital rape, though India is yet to criminalize marital rape and pointed out the stigma against abortion care and even how taboos prevent contraceptive access ! They also defines what the now amended act meant by "woman" as now people who were assigned female sex at birth. They also emphasized the importance of the woman's choice. In such a bad year for reproductive rights globally such as roe vs wade being overturned in the USA and the EU planning to put heavy restrictions on abortion care and many other countries criminalizing abortions this news is truly good to hear and quite important.
