Why is the coat hanger a pro choice symbol?

Writer's picture: Advait SinghAdvait Singh

The term coat hanger abortion or the coat hanger being used as a symbol for reproductive rights comes from the pre-roe era of the united states (1960’s) comes from women having to be forced to procede with abortions at home while this was extremely unsafe and un-hygenic it was quite common, Women all over latin america and even the world used coat hangers as surgical equipment and proceded with the procedure by themselves this led many women to die, get infections and even drastic blood loss, Now in current times and after roe era the term “coat hanger abortion” is used to signify unsafe abortions as a whole. Many activists and politicians warn about the fact that roe vs wade being overturned could again increase the amounts of “coat hanger abortions” The coat hanger is also a cheap and readily available object so it quickly became a protest symbol.
